Flynn Open House BBQ Thursday, 9.15

Hello Flynn Families,

The second Flynn Open House BBQ will take place this Thursday, Sept. 15 from 5 to 7 pm at the school.  There will be FREE food, including Hotdogs, Veggie Dogs, Salads donated by City Market, Fruit, Chips and Drinks.

Come enjoy the evening and be part of our wonderful Flynn Community. Food will be served from 5 to 6 and then the classrooms will be open to visit with your child(ren) from 6-7.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Please let Mary Mitchell know if you are able to help set up (starting around 4:30,) serve food, or clean up.  (Maryellemo1@hotmail.com)  Or, just ask when you get there how you can help at the food table in the courtyard.

The PTO is also looking for someone to take on posting the weekly Flynn School PTO Blog.This is an easy but important way to help keep our community informed.  Contact the Flynn PTO at Flynnschoolpto@gmail.com to let them know you are interested.

Book Fair Thanks

THANK you to all the families and Flynn friends who supported our Spring Scholastic Book Fair. Three cheers for VOLUNTEERS!!!

What a BLAST we had! Happy readers and excitement over books, books, books made my heart soar!

We were able to keep $865.68 in cash profit. These funds will go directly towards purchasing new books in our multiple copy library collection.
We also earned a BONUS of $358.37 in Scholastic Dollars to redeem at the online store. I’ll have our awesome firefly kids help me choose books they’d like to add to our school library collection!

Springfest Canceled

The PTO would like to announce the Springfest will not be happening this year.  This has been an amazing event in the past but due to no volunteer interest there was no option but to cancel.  If this is an event you would like in the upcoming years please reach out and let the PTO know.

School Libraries in Trouble

Three of our Burlington schools will be cutting full-time teacher-librarians, and this will put us in violation of the VT State Board of Education’s Quality Standards.

Effects of Budget Cuts

This document below was collated by BEA per teacher feedback.  Teachers were asked two questions:
  • How have the last two years of cuts to direct instruction affected student learning and achievement?
  • How will the new cuts affect student learning and achievement?
The question is, why cuts to direct instruction?  We have the highest budget in Chittenden County.  We spend the most on students (6 of 9).  Our teachers are 6th of 9 in terms of salaries and benefits (so, contrary to Porter’s marketing, it is not teachers salaries).  So where is the money?

School Board Meeting, April 12, 7pm

All BSD students, parents, grandparents, community members, and friends:

Please come to the School Board Meeting scheduled for Tuesday night to show your support for the following concerns:

  • The importance of parent and community involvement in BSD’s future;
  • Student safety (emotional and physical) K-12;
  • Transparency about the budget, potential changes at schools, etc.;
  • Impact of proposed cuts on our students’ access to classroom time;
  • Concerns about Special Education students falling through bigger cracks in the wake of these cuts;
  • Importance of enrichment and co-curriculars;
  • BHS’ accreditation in 2016;
  • Community climate resulting from current management style.

The meeting will start at 7:00 p.m. in Contois Auditorium at City Hall. We encourage students, families, BSD staff, community members to gather on Church Street outside Contois Auditorium at 6:30 p.m.  The opportunity for public comment is quite limited, so it is important to show our support through numbers for those who have the opportunity to speak.

Bike to School Day, May 4

Bike to School Day, May 4, is a national event that gives communities across the country the opportunity to join together in bicycling to school on the same day. Bike to School Day is part of the movement for year-round safe routes to school. Communities use the event to encourage biking (and walking) to school as a healthy way for kids and families to make their school commute fun and active.

Day in the Dirt, April 30

We have been chosen to by Vermont Community Gardens to receive support in installing our two new garden areas (orchard in front of school and outdoor classroom in courtyard) on Day in the Dirt on the morning of April 30th.  Yay Flynn!!

Change Race

Change Race is off to an amazing start!  At this time Mr. Mack’s class is off to a strong start.  Money raised from the Change Race will be used to buy items from the teacher’s wish list.

STEAM blog post

Here’s a repost of the last STEAM blog entry, in case you missed it:

I was really impressed with our fifth graders last week when each class completed the last challenge that aligns with our submersibles unit. Before entering into this challenge, they had to investigate and grapple with the idea of mass and volume in relation to sinking and floating. Some students even began to understand the concept of density.

Every team was able to complete the first challenge of creating a floating submersible with different density vials that served as the submersibles “instruments”.   Almost every team after that, was able to complete the challenge of retrieving three different packages from our “sea floor”.   In the end, I was impressed that most students were able to understand mass and volume in relation to sinking or floating.  These concepts can prove confusing for students.  Our fifth grade proved that when engaged and challenged they persevere and can learn complicated scientific understanding.

Pizza/bake sale on March 18th

We will be having a pizza  and bake sale at skate night on March 18!! If you are interested in raising money to help pay for the play please consider doing one of the following:

  • Bake for the bake sale. It really helps to have a full bake sale table!
  • Pre-order a pizza. Look for a pre-order sheet coming home in next few weeks.
  • Sign up to staff the bake sale or help hand out pizzas at skate night.

The Flynn School teachers and staff all greatly enjoyed the treats and spiffing of the break room that the Kindergarten families provided. What a wonderful way to begin the winter vacation!

Box Tops

The Spring submission of box tops has been submitted. The amount was approximately $140 which is roughly a 50 dollar increase over last spring. Thank you so much for clipping and collecting box tops for our PTO. It really is one of the easiest ways to help!!! Our next submission will be in the Fall during the next school year at the end of October. Please continue to clip and collect box tops year round!!! Please ask friends and family to collect for us too- every little bit contributes to PTO funds for our school!!!
