HALLOWEEN

Our annual Halloween costume parade is happening on TUESDAY 10/31 @ 1:30.  Parents are invited to come and watch students parade over to Birchwood….students not participating will have other activities available in the library.
Please be mindful of the following costume guidelines provided by the Burlington School District:
Halloween Costume Guidelines
This memo outlines District guidelines regarding Halloween activities to allow students to feel safe, respected, and included.
The following guidelines shall apply:
  • Consideringthe national concerns around clowns, the District will not allow any clown costumes whatsoever or any attire that completely hides a student’s identity. lf any building administrator or other staff should encounter a person dressed as a clown, Central Office and the SRO should be contacted immediately.
  • Some parents/cultures may not celebrate Halloween and would not like their students participating in any Halloween-related activities. Schools should create a safe space for students who cannot participate and all attempts should be made engage these students in meaningful alternative activities and help these students not feel excluded.
  • One of the most important mandates is that costumes shall not be demeaning to any person or group based on age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity (boys as girls and vice versa), nationality, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation or to any individual staff or student at the school. Costumes should be respectful and culturally sensitive, (e.9., non-Muslim students should not wear hijab or other garlo that could be viewed as culturally insensitive).
  • Costumes should not include blood or imply any type of violence
  • For any student who cannot afford a costume, the school should provide one
  • No costume can be worn that is unsafe or that may create a safety hazard.
  • No weapons or replica weapons are to be brought to school.
  • No masks are allowed that completely hide the identity of a student; however, masks may be worn during a parade or other specific activity, provided that safety is not hindered, as determined by the site administrator.

THANK YOU- BOOK FAIR…

With help from MANY volunteers, we had a terrific Fall Scholastic Book Fair on Tuesday night, October 24th.
We sold $3100.03 in books, book, books to help support our growing Flynn Fireflies!
Through your generosity, our Flynn Library reaps the rewards with $1710.52 in Scholastic product dollars to spend on library books and learning materials to support literacy for every Flynn student.
Thank you for supporting our Book Fair and helping each child build excitement for reading!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

School excitement is building as we get closer to the theater production of Jungle Book, Jr! The JJ Flynn School play is an annual tradition but it requires lots of help! Even if your kiddos are not in the production, you can still support the efforts to ensure this opportunity is available for future years. Consider offering something for the bake sale table, or volunteering a bit of your time to staff the front of the house as a greeter, flower or bake sale seller. It takes a village! Sign up here!

THIRD GRADE FUN

The Third grade made the best of their fall day trip to Camp Abnaki on a very cold, wet, rainy day. Students made pretzels, participated in team building activities, did arts and crafts and of course roasted marshmallows by a campfire.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PTO…

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! The PTO efforts are moving forward…In addition to hosting the back to School BBQ (in conjunction with the open house), the PTO is supporting the play, hosting the pasta dinner at the upcoming book fair and more! The leadership team this year includes Sarah Kleinman and Amanda Reid as Co-Chairs (pictured below), Christine Leithead as Secretary, Sarah Kleinman as Treasurer, Darcie Belisle as Fundraising Chair, Sarah DeShaw as Communications Chair, and Kristie Roberts as Teacher Appreciation Chair. Most of us are new to these positions and are grateful for the advice and support of those who have come before us.

The PTO serves a few purposes; offering and supporting school-wide events including both school enrichment opportunities as well as family gatherings during the out of school hours. We also tackle issues that need addressing or concerns where we can use our voice for advocacy. It’s also a great way to meet other parents and gain a sense of belonging to the school. Every parent is a member – you just need to come and lend your voice. We meet the first Thursdays of every month at 6:30pm in the school library.  If you need to bring your kiddos to attend, please do so. We do our best to have childcare available.

Even if you cannot attend or wish not to get involved at this level, offering activities and supporting our teachers does cost money and that’s where we need your help. Whether it’s diligently collecting box tops, sending in treats for bake sales or making a pay it forward donation, every little bit helps. It takes a village and we appreciate any support you can offer, in any shape or form.

If you wish to ask a question, have a concern, or just want to learn more, you can email us at flynnschoolpto@gmail.com

Hope to see you around!
Sarah and Amanda – Co- Chairs

Book Fair Thanks

From Cara Clopton, Flynn Librarian:

THANK you to all the families and Flynn friends who supported our Spring Scholastic Book Fair. Three cheers for VOLUNTEERS!!!

What a BLAST we had! Happy readers and excitement over books, books, books made my heart soar!

We were able to keep $865.68 in cash profit. These funds will go directly towards purchasing new books in our multiple copy library collection.
We also earned a BONUS of $358.37 in Scholastic Dollars to redeem at the online store. I’ll have our awesome firefly kids help me choose books they’d like to add to our school library collection!
Hooray for reading!

Springfest Canceled

The PTO would like to announce the Springfest will not be happening this year.  This has been an amazing event in the past but due to no volunteer interest there was no option but to cancel.  If this is an event you would like in the upcoming years please reach out and let the PTO know.

School Libraries in Trouble

Three of our Burlington schools will be cutting full-time teacher-librarians, and this will put us in violation of the VT State Board of Education’s Quality Standards.

Please check out this fact sheet about what this could mean for the district:
