Effects of Budget Cuts

This document below was collated by BEA per teacher feedback.  Teachers were asked two questions:
  • How have the last two years of cuts to direct instruction affected student learning and achievement?
  • How will the new cuts affect student learning and achievement?
The question is, why cuts to direct instruction?  We have the highest budget in Chittenden County.  We spend the most on students (6 of 9).  Our teachers are 6th of 9 in terms of salaries and benefits (so, contrary to Porter’s marketing, it is not teachers salaries).  So where is the money?

School Board Meeting, April 12, 7pm

All BSD students, parents, grandparents, community members, and friends:

Please come to the School Board Meeting scheduled for Tuesday night to show your support for the following concerns:

  • The importance of parent and community involvement in BSD’s future;
  • Student safety (emotional and physical) K-12;
  • Transparency about the budget, potential changes at schools, etc.;
  • Impact of proposed cuts on our students’ access to classroom time;
  • Concerns about Special Education students falling through bigger cracks in the wake of these cuts;
  • Importance of enrichment and co-curriculars;
  • BHS’ accreditation in 2016;
  • Community climate resulting from current management style.

The meeting will start at 7:00 p.m. in Contois Auditorium at City Hall. We encourage students, families, BSD staff, community members to gather on Church Street outside Contois Auditorium at 6:30 p.m.  The opportunity for public comment is quite limited, so it is important to show our support through numbers for those who have the opportunity to speak.

Spring Book Fair, Tuesday, April 12, 5-7pm

Let’s celebrate reading at the Flynn Scholastic Book Fair!  We will be holding a Family Book Fair on Tuesday, April 12 from 5:00-7:00 pm in the cafeteria.

Along with picture books, non-fiction books, early readers, and chapter books, Scholastic will send us award winning and low-priced books.  All proceeds from the book fair supplement library funding to help with the purchase of books, furnishings, and equipment for our school library.

Visit the ONLINE fair at http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/aprilfair which opens April 7th!

In addition, the book fair is a great way to connect with your child about books they would like to read. Families may also choose to make book donations to classroom teachers.  Just let us know at the register, and we will hand deliver your gift!

We look forward to seeing you at our book fair where you are sure to find some fabulously funny, wildly adventurous, and marvelously mysterious reading material!  If you have any questions or would enjoy helping out with this fun event, please contact Cara Clopton (cclopton@bsdvt.org) or Corey Wallace (cwallace@bsdvt.org).

Happy Reading!

STEAM blog post

Here’s a repost of the last STEAM blog entry, in case you missed it:

I was really impressed with our fifth graders last week when each class completed the last challenge that aligns with our submersibles unit. Before entering into this challenge, they had to investigate and grapple with the idea of mass and volume in relation to sinking and floating. Some students even began to understand the concept of density.

Every team was able to complete the first challenge of creating a floating submersible with different density vials that served as the submersibles “instruments”.   Almost every team after that, was able to complete the challenge of retrieving three different packages from our “sea floor”.   In the end, I was impressed that most students were able to understand mass and volume in relation to sinking or floating.  These concepts can prove confusing for students.  Our fifth grade proved that when engaged and challenged they persevere and can learn complicated scientific understanding.

Pizza/bake sale on March 18th

We will be having a pizza  and bake sale at skate night on March 18!! If you are interested in raising money to help pay for the play please consider doing one of the following:

  • Bake for the bake sale. It really helps to have a full bake sale table!
  • Pre-order a pizza. Look for a pre-order sheet coming home in next few weeks.
  • Sign up to staff the bake sale or help hand out pizzas at skate night.

If you can do any of these jobs, can you contact Kim at kimberlyannhunt@gmail.com

Click here for a pizza order form...

The form says that pizza will arrive at 6 but since skate night starts at 5:30 we’ll be doing 5:30 instead.

Outdoor Learning Space

The Outdoor Learning Space is becoming a reality due to some dedicated teachers/staff/parents and a UVM program helping in the process.
If you have suggestions or ideas about the Outdoor Learning Space then please reply to flynnschoolpto@gmail.com with your ideas or availability to help.

Art Volunteers

Mrs. Plumer is in need of some art volunteers. Do you like to decorate? She needs a parent helper or two to hang some artwork in our hallways. Additionally, it’s time for our smocks to have a bath. It would be great to have a volunteer wash them over winter break. You can contact her at jplumer@bsdvt.org.

Read the STEM blog!  Here’s an excerpt:

Video Presentations of Robots

A few months ago, fourth graders were given a challenge to create robots with Lego WeDo Robotic sets.  These sets are a user friendly and simplistic way to enter into the world of robotics and code them to do simple tasks.

The following videos were created by our Lego Robotic teams and shared at an all school assembly.  The challenge they were given was to create a robot that used either the motor or the sensor and solved a problem.  The ideas students came up with were varied and creative, many hoping to help humanity tackle problems.

(Read on to see some of the videos they created!)

Be Our Superhero!!  Whose Hero Will You Be?

A wish list for staff has been set up by Joanna Elliott (our own PTO Superhero) to help our amazing staff receive any items they are needing.  Please take some time to browse the items.  If you are unable to come in please let us know and we can give you some options.

Partnership for Outdoor Learning from Rebekah Thomas

Please respond to flynnschoolpto@gmail.com if you have any suggestions or want to volunteer.

  1. We are trying to use logs/stumps as seats for our outdoor classroom spaces.  We are looking for pieces that are approximately 12-18 inches tall.  We are wondering if there are parents or community members who can help us find, cut, and/or move them to Flynn. Continuing steps of sanding and shellacking would be necessary.
  2. Does anyone install irrigation or pipes underground or recommend an installer?  We’d love help with our garden irrigation system. (Money available for installing/necessary equipment)
  3. We are looking for seed starts to put in the garden on the South side when spring arrives.  Are there any folks with gardening center connections who may be able to help us acquire these?

Leadership Opportunities

PTO will be looking at some upcoming openings in leadership next year.  These are very exciting and you can be part of an amazing team!
